Boomers, What's Your Purpose In Life?
Hey Boomers, it’s time to jack up your purpose. Is there anyone out there that has an earnest desire to do something more with their life then what has gone down so far? I am talking about people who have priorities other then retirement and cruising. What’s your purpose in life? Maybe you want to meet a payroll, I am talking about your own financial responsibilities. Helping your children or grandchildren get a decent education. Maybe your purpose means working a little longer, with hopes of putting away a nest egg for “your retirement”. Or, how about having enough money to meet medical emergencies. Or for that matter, what about salting away some money for, just in case, meeting nursing home costs for yourself or your spouse? Or, don’t tell me, maybe you feel you haven’t made your mark on the world yet. And, this is very important, you feel you have a lot more potential then what appears on the surface of your life history. Whatever your motivations, your biggest challenge is making yourself ready to meet these upcoming challenges, both mentally and physically. If you have been on retirement for awhile, you have become used to living without pressure to get things done on specific times. In another words, you have been out of the job market for awhile. It’s like a boxer going back into the ring after being away from the game for awhile. You are rusty. You may not be aware of it, but believe me, the people you are performing services for will notice it. So what do you do? Simple. You get your self tightened up with lots of discipline. If you have been a self starter, then the return to “work” won’t be all that challenging. Why? Because, you are used to living with pressure. Even during retirement, you most likely keep a short lease on yourself. Life long habits are hard to shake. You probably need to inject a sense of urgency into your “mission”. I kid you not, the best way to get a sense of “urgency” is to have been threatened with a life threatening illness. I am not kidding. Let me give you my own personal experience. Two years ago I was hit with colon cancer. Shortly thereafter, I nearly died at the hospital, because I got too much radiation. I was in the hospital for 18 days. I was left with vomiting and diarrhea around the clock. Woops, I also caught pneumonia. Some people thought I was a goner. My proudest moment, was when I began recuperating. The main Doctor at the hospital, visited me with a cute little nurse at his side. He told her I was a genuine “hard case”. Semper Fi Marine. That was a very proud moment for me. Meaning, I didn’t wimp out! Yes, I did recover from those difficult circumstances. Slowly, but surely, I could feel my strength returning. First my physical strength came back. Then, this took a little longer, my spirituality, focus, and optimism returned. This was the tricky part. For a long while, I felt the Grim Reaper peering down at me. You know, like licking his chops. People would tell me how lucky I was to be alive. Further more, they would exclaim God must have plans for me. Well, you know what? I have thought long and hard about this and I have come to the conclusion that is time for me to quite screwing around. You know what I mean? It's time to develop a sense of purpose. The point I am making is that people who want to shake things up in their lives and make things happen, need to create a sense of urgency, a sense of purpose. Anybody that has had a serious life threatening circumstance, knows what I am talking about. Everybody else, most likely, doesn’t have a clue. And, more appropriately, they could care less. I guess there is a degree of normalcy in that. Maybe even beauty. I guess this is Natures way of dealing with reality. I do have a sense of urgency. It’s very quite and unobtrusive. I don’t run around with prompt cards on my forehead saying-Urgent-Urgent. I am definitely in the process of making things happen for myself and the people around me, that I care about. Why? Because I really now realize my mortality. I know now I am no longer bullet proof…It took me awhile, probably longer then most. But, who cares and who’s counting?
