If there is something out there that can help you, why not jump on the bandwagon, like a lot of other people. What am I talking about? Studies show that people who practice any mainstream faith live longer, have fewer strokes, possess better immune systems, less heart disease, and lower blood pressure than people who don’t.“So impressive are the health benefits of religion, in fact, that after reviewing more than a thousand studies on the impact of religion upon health, Dr. Harold Koenig of Duke University Medical Center recently told The New Republic, that ‘Lack of religious involvement has an effect on mortality that is equivalent to forty years of smoking one pack of cigarettes per day.” The power of belief isn't limited to religion. Andrew Newberg, in his bookwhy we believe what we believe So guess what? Dear Mr. Wright got wind of the fact, that his doctor was conducting cancer research with a new drug called Krebiozen which the media touted as a miracle drug. Mr. Wright convinced his doctor to give him the drug. Making a long story short, tests showed that Wright’s tumors had shrunk 50% after he was injected with the drug. Other patients were tested with this new drug, but the results showed no positive effect. Only Mr. Wright was affected positively by the drug. So, the docs concluded that Mr. Wrights positive expectancy and belief caused this seemingly miraculous cure. Apparently, Mr. Wright found out latter that Krebiozen was not the miracle drug he thought is was. And, sorry to say, a few days latter, poor Mr. Wright died. What stands out here, is that the power of belief itself, can affect miracles. Let me bring your attention to a time in history when miracles happened quite often. I am referring to Jesus’s and the Buddha’s times. If you check out the New testament where Jesus was reported to have performed many miracles, you will note, that He only required his subjects to “believe” and or “have faith”. That’s all. He didn’t give anybody the 3rd degree- “Did you do this or did you this or did you do that?” No way. He just required you to “believe” that the desired end result could be done. For an example, in Matthew 17-20:”Truly I tell you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, “Move from here to there,” and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.” Or, if you like Buddha, take this example, as Marcus Borg, in his book Jesus and Buddha,the Parallel Sayings, points out- “A monk who is skilled in concentration can cut the Himalayas in two.” Being an eternal optimist, I love the potential for “The Power of Belief”. that’s why I enjoy magic, the supernatural, yes, and even Martial Arts. You can get a lot of this power of belief background with the practice of martial arts. What fascinates me about this whole power of belief business, is that it offers an avenue to fantastic possibilities for the future of mankind. We are not limited by the material world and its realities. New discoveries in the fields of science are coming up with extraordinary observations that lend to the idea that our physical world and its laws may one day be ground into the dust of history as wayward and backward thinking. For an example, Astrophysicists now claim that the Universe is made up of “stuff” that we have no idea what it is. This stuff, dark energy and matter, in fact, consists of 3/4s of the Universe, and we don’t have a clue about it. Most likely, the people that will enjoy the positive benefits of any radical new discoveries of our understanding of science and the universe, will be ironically, the people who embrace supernaturalism and mysticism. Many people place the above people in the category of “wishful thinkers”. The future will determine the validity of this. We will see. I am a firm believer in the maxim, “If it works, why not use it”. I will tell you that there is one group of people, who have every hope and reason to embrace the power of belief and all of its positive implications, and that is-Cancer Survivors. You better believe it.! I am personally involved with this subject, Cancer. cancer alarm mode Religious people, by their very nature, are strong believers in the Supernatural. My childhood upbringing was strong in religious indoctrination. So, this stuff comes natural for me. Anyway, six months ago, I was recuperating from my Cancer Treatments. My surgeon insisted that I get a couple tests, that would determine, if I was cured(temp) or still infect ed with the big C. Needless to say, I was quite apprehensive and worried about getting bad news. I immediately started praying for a real recovery. My background is Christian, so I checked the miracles of Jesus. To my delight, I discovered Christ was not a nitpicker, when he performed miracles. Like are you a good little boy Jackie? Like I mentioned earlier in this article, Jesus just required people to “believe” that miracles could happen. Making a long story short, I am ok now. No signs of cancer. It could always come back. I know this. This is the nasty nature of Cancer. I am just thrilled and grateful that I am feeling great now! I will take what I can get, just like any other cancer survivor.
