It's Time To Make It Happen!

Make it happen Baby Boomers, cancer survivors, and everybody else who feels they are lucky to be alive.

Do you have your life’s plan made out? If not, why not? You think you are going to live forever? Here’s what I am talking about. Most people who realize their mortality know that they only have so much time left on earth. It's time to make it happen.

And, if you are like a lot of us, you aren’t exactly happy about that fact-limited time to live. Why? Because, if you are like me and millions of other people, there are an awful lot of things you want to do and accomplish before you leave mother earth.

So, the question is what do we do about it? The number one thing that comes to my mind is that it would be wise to know where we stand. In another words, find out what is important to us. What are our priorities in life and how can we make it happen?

This should be relatively easy. I mean after having lived fifty some odd years, most people have a clue as to what is really important in their lives.

Granted, it is human nature to just sort of muddle along. In fact, I dare say, this is what most people do. Just sort of muddle along. But, the question is, is this really in our best interests?

Well, any of you people who realize your mortality, know the answer to that question. Heck no. We don’t have time to waste. Who wants to just muddle along? Rather, the smart thing seems to me to make the most of every minute we have left on this earth. You know, make it count!

This means we should have clear cut ideas as to what we want to do and where we want to go. Does this make sense? For a lot of people, this entails a great deal of introspection. Some people, just by their nature, don’t like or appreciate introspection.

Why not, you ask? Well, perhaps these people are quite heavy into their daily routine of just getting by. In another words, some people simply don’t have time for values clarification. They are too busy meeting the demands of daily living. Like earning a living, putting food on the table, and meeting their daily responsibilities.

To those possibilities I say, “That’s ok”. That will work. We can still clarify and make our lives count. You really don’t need a lot of witty introspection inorder to devise a “priority list”. So let's make it happen.

Here is a simple trick that will lay it all out for you. You know, like give you a clear cut black and white “what’s important to me” list. Just picture yourself dead, lying in that coffin or urn. Imagine a bunch of people that you know or that are important to you standing over your burial site.

Now what are they saying about you? Lets start with your loved one. These people that you love and care about. Hopefully you gave these people lots of your time and interest. You made an honest effort to help them in some way. If that is the case, they will know doubt miss you very much.

Whoops! Did I hit a nerve here? Maybe you better grab a “to do list for my favorite people” and get cranking. Time doesn’t stand still. Let’s add some names and goals we want for our favorite people.

Do you have any moral or ethical things that are pushing you? What about some of your internalized ideals that you have been carrying around with you, but haven’t had the time or inclination to deal with?

I am talking about charitable and volunteer activities that might be better off if you addressed some of their needs. Things like being a big brother or sister, mentoring someone, and or volunteer for helping out at the local community outreach group. I am sure you can make the time, how about one hour a week, devoted to helping someone other then yourself? You will get a adrenalin rush by doing something like this.

So do yourself a favor and get out that “to do list”. Don’t wait until you are on your last leg, lying in the hospital, and wishing you would have lived your life differently. Let's make it happen.
