Big Brother and Sisters organizations are all over the country. The question, is it too late for me, is a non starter isn't? Become a tutor. Tutor of what? Help them with reading, writing , and arithmetic. There are volunteer programs all over the country that are dying to get there hands on people that will volunteer to help kids. Check out your local county educational programs. If you don’t want to help young people, well then, go help older people. They are all over the place-hospice, nursing homes, maybe living next door to you. All alone. Maybe they need a friendly hand or a little encouragement. Just having someone to stop by with a little “How are you doing?” Or for that matter, see what needs the Aarp organization has. They are into everything now days and they need volunteers. The point I am trying to make is you can have almost anything you want, if you only want it bad enough! How bad? Let’s say bad enough to give yourself permission to step out of your comfort zone. That’s right. Is it too late for me? Get out of your rut. Move into the world of the strange and unfamiliar. Believe me, there is nothing like it. It is fun and exciting. And, most importantly, it can have a tremendous positive influence on you and your closely associated circle of friends and loved ones. What is there to be afraid of? You are going to screw up? Make a bunch of mistakes? Is that so bad? Ha! Ha! You are kidding me, right? When I began this article, we were dealing with the terrible problem of having all this wisdom and knowledge and being worried that we may not be able to use it. Is it too late for me? Let me ask you something. How did you get all of this wisdom? From a dream? From a wish? No, I don’t think so. You got your practical wisdom and knowledge from living life, which means also making a lot of mistakes. Trial and error. That’s what happens when you try new and different things. So what do we do now with all of this wisdom? First thing we have to do is lighten up. Let’s be real. None of us are going to get out of this life alive. I hope this puts things into perspective. Is it too late for me? Second, I can’t emphasize this enough, we have to break out of our comfort zone. In another words, have the courage to do different things or do the same old things in a different manner. Let me worn you, this business of getting out of the comfort zone, is very addictive. Why? Because, when you get into unfamiliar territory, it can be very scary and exhilarating. Which means you get to be on the receiving end of a lot of adrenalin. None of this “ same old, same old”, business. Subsequently, you find yourself with all kinds of energy to burn. And believe me, you can’t beat walking around town with a lot of super charged energy in your torque. Dynamite! This morning I took a stab at venturing out of my old rut with one of my neighbors.joel osteen I did this at the suggestion of Rev. Joel Osteen(link) I heard him saying we should widen our circle of friends. Don’t be so picky about people that we associate with or are friendly with. Is it too late for me? This particular neighbor was driving me nuts. I mean I didn’t want anything to do with them. Why? They built a home improvement that took away a degree of my privacy. This really teed me off. I mean, like I am the only one in the entire neighborhood with this monstrosity. Why Lord? Why me? Anyway, I know these neighbors are well meaning people and they are basically very nice. So, in my mind, I wrote the entire episode off as just plain ignorance on their part. Heck, I have done some pretty stupid things in my life also. So, I made up my mind that I was going to be nice to them and talk to them the next time I had the opportunity. Sure enough, this morning I ran into Mr. And Mrs. X, so I initiated a polite conversation. Guess what? Before I knew it, I found out all kinds of great things about them. I guess you could say, I am lucky to have them as neighbors. When I left them, I felt energized and very happy. So, this just proves a point, you need to take chances and venture out into the unknown. When you do, great stuff can happen to you. So, you decide, is it too late for me?
