Hey Cancer Survivors, The Intruder Is Coming!
Cancer survivors, please watch out for the Intruder! Who’s the Intruder? Why he’s the guy that wants to create havoc in your life. What’s this about, anyway? I am a cancer survivor and so are you, right? I did colon cancer 1 ½ years ago. Yeah, the surgery, chemo and radiation. (The radiation put me back in the hospital for another 18 days!) But, who’s counting? The point being, we are cancer survivors, by the grace of God. The Docs, research groups, and cancer networks all say the same thing…“Attitude” is everything. Attitude is key to obtaining and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. And that is why I am warning you about the Intruder. He is determined to destroy your positive attitude.Who or what is the Intruder? Look up above at the picture. He’s the shark in the picture. (I actually shot this pic while visiting the Aquarium in Sydney.) The Intruder wears many disguises. You know them as anxiety, negative self-talk, worry, self-doubt, and fear. The Intruder loves to go after cancer survivors. Why? Because they are very vulnerable people. You know, most of them, including me, are walking around with a lot of buried self-doubts and fears. I mean, it’s no wonder. Eveyday you turn on the TV, some other celebrity or newsworthy person is having a recurrence of their cancer. It is enough to shake up even Mr. Rigor Mortis. The way I hear it, it is very important to maintain a positive attitude. This helps to keep a strong immune system. You want your body to keep fighting those nasty little cancer cells. Additionally, a little exercise every day is also good for the immune system. In fact, you should force yourself to keep up a strong vigorous daily exercise program, whether you feel like it or not. Unless of course, if you are suffering from serious cardiac problems or anything else, that exercise would turn out to be detrimental to your health. Your best bet is to talk to your doctor. Get his OK and recommendations for an exercise schedule. I work out 6 days a week. Usually my workouts consist of cardio for 1 ½ hours at a stretch or I combine cardio with weight resistance. I believe so much of an individual’s recovery from cancer is mental. For an example, I found myself low on “energy” after my cancer treatments. Six months latter, after my treatments, I was tested for possible recurrences of cancer. The Docs gave me the “all clear” sign. Immediately after my “all clear” signals, I noticed a surge of energy. And, this new found energy is with me to this day. My focus and concentration is very good. I venture to say, my little secret along with other cancer victims' little secret is that each “day for me is an absolute gift”. I don’t take life or anything for granted anymore. Life and time are very precious commodities for me. You better believe it, I do have a bounce in my step. As far as I am concerned, I am going to live forever. If I am wrong. So what? No big deal. Sue me. I want you to understand how the Intruder operates. If you understand your enemy, you can beat him. Or at least you can avoid letting him do serious damage to you. The Intruder and his “little helpers” travel around in a wolf pack. Just like the German submarines did during WWII. Remember history? (The German Wolf Pack Submarines)A group of submarines would patrol the Atlantic seas trolling for Merchant Marine ships carrying cargo to the Allies in Europe. When the Wolf Packs found an unescorted group of Merchant ships, they would torpedo them. For a long time, these wolf packs were very successful until the allied navies broke their encryption codes. Then we found out where they were and sank them. This same analogy can be applied to the Intruder and his “little helpers”. Don’t kid yourself, the Intruder operates the same insidious way. He use stealth. But don’t worry, because you and I have his number. Right? Just remember, your goal is to stay positive and strong. Don’t forget your job is to keep that ‘Immune System’ strong and mean, just like a real kick butt Marine Corps killing machine. Remember, you are playing for keeps. Keep your cardio and weight resistance programs going. Yes, do it even when you don’t feel like it. Your immune system will love you for it. Don’t let anybody or anything get you down and depressed. The Intruder and his “little helpers” will smell that weakness and they will go after you! You see these creepy characters are very cowardly and they only go after people when they show some weakness. You have proven to yourself and the world, that you can play with the Big Boys and Girls by surviving your cancer fight. You don’t have to apologize or explain yourself to anyone. Enjoy your life like there is no tomorrow. Cheers, jack
